The City is seeking highly motivated, well-organized Police Cadet to work on a part-time basis. Under direct supervision, then as proficiency increases general supervision. Incumbents in this part-time non-sworn classification may be assigned to provide clerical, technical, and administrative support for departmental staff in one of four areas: animal control, property, records, traffic, and vehicle maintenance. This classification is to provide incumbents with an exposure to law enforcement while continuing their education and career preparation.

As a Cadet, your duties may typically include accepting property into the property room; log items using a property receipt showing the location and chain of custody for each item; Release evidence to officers and property to rightful owners; send letters to people whose property is ready for release; purge evidence.

Schedule repair of vehicles and equipment; review reported vehicle deficiencies; transport vehicles and equipment to repair shop; arrange for tows. Maintaining and ordering police supplies.

Copy, index, file distribute and retrieve files, records, and reports; assemble court packets.

Enter data onto appropriate logs; enter, retrieve and purge data on the automated systems; access a variety of databases.

Transport animals to shelter; transport all injured animals to veterinary hospital; dispose of deceased animals. Quarantine animals that have bitten people and complete animal related reports.

Patrol assigned areas of the city and issue citations to parking violators throughout the city.

The Requirements

To be considered as a candidate for Police Cadet, you must meet the following minimum requirements:

- Be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment.
- Be able to prove United States Citizenship.
- Have no felony convictions.
- Must be able to type 40 words per minute.
- Possess a valid California Driver's License.
- Have completed the twelfth grade or equivalent at the time of appointment.
- Successfully pass a background investigation. Prior use of controlled substances may be
grounds for disqualification.

The Compensation

As a Cadet you will be paid $11.80-$13.01 per hour in three steps over a period of two years.

Before an appointment may be made to the position, the person selected must provide proof of identity and authorization to work in the United States, according to the federal law.

Recruitment Process

The Selection Process
Properly complete and submit a Union City employment application.
Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee that you will be invited to participate in the process. Only the candidates that have the best combination of qualifications in relation to the requirement and duties of the position will continue in the selection process. The process will include an oral panel interview with law enforcement professionals, may also include an interview with Operation and Support Services Managers, and other related test components. A limited number of applicants will be subjected to a polygraph examination; a thorough examination of their personal background, a thorough medical examination.

Employee Benefits

- Part-time employees scheduled for regular year-round weekly assignments of twenty
(20) hours or more may participate in the group medical, dental, or vision care plans. The
City will contribute up to $150.00 per month toward medical, dental, and/or vision care
premiums for eligible employees electing coverage.

- Having accumulated at least 1,040 hours during the preceding fiscal year, shall be entitled to
leave credits of forty (40) hours on the first week day of the following fiscal year.

- Uniform allowance of $400 over a period of twelve months with each pay check.

- CalPERS enrollment in either 2%@60 (Classic Employees) or the new 2%@62 (New
Employees) formula is dependent on the individual's eligibility, as per AB 340. The employee
will be responsible for the 7% contribution to-wards CalPERS retirement plan.

- No social security deductions made except 1.45% for Medicare.
