The County of San Diego Sheriff's Department is offering an exciting job opportunity as a

Supervising Correctional Counselor

This class is found only in the Sheriff's Department, Detentions Services Bureau. Under direction, Supervising Correctional Counselors provide first-line supervision over subordinate Correctional Counselors conducting inmate counseling in County detention facilities. Incumbents will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing correctional programs such as County Parole, Inmate Classification, Work Release, Inmate Education, Law Library, Legal Services and other educational, religious or social programs.

Education and/or Experience:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited U. S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in counseling, psychology, sociology, criminal justice/administration, or other behavioral or social science field; AND,

One (1) year as a Correctional Counselor in the San Diego County's Sheriff's Department or equivalent.

The department is seeking a knowledge worker who demonstrates strong leadership and communication skills, hold self and others accountable, maximizes team effectiveness by leveraging resources, and demonstrates ethical behavior.

Working Conditions

Work primarily takes place in locked County detention facilities with restricted access. Work involves frequent travel to locations within and outside of the County. Work involves frequent exposure to computer screens. Work involves constant contact with inmates who may be potentially upset, hostile, violent, and abusive. Work may involve exposure with inmates who have communicable or contagious diseases, in which case, the incumbent will be required to wear filters, respirators, or other protective equipment.

Background Qualifications

Must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness. Felony convictions will be disqualifying. Misdemeanor convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and recency. Prior to appointment, candidates will be subject to a thorough background investigation which may include a psychological, truth verification or other examination or test.

Evaluation

Qualified applicants will be placed on a twelve (12) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment and supplemental applications. Please ensure all information is complete and accurate as the responses you provide on the supplemental application questionnaire will be reviewed using an automated evaluation system.
