The County of San Diego is currently accepting applications for Confidential Legal Secretary. You will be responsible for composing and preparing highly confidential legal documents concerning internal County matters. In this position, you will provide legal secretarial services for attorneys and other professional staff within County Counsel (Juvenile Dependency Division), Public Defender or District Attorney. As a Confidential Legal Secretary, you may be exposed to highly emotionally charged cases.

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who can effectively prioritize multiple tasks and assignments; apply their knowledge of basic legal processes and procedures to efficiently compose and prepare highly confidential legal documents; review a variety of legal documents for completeness and accuracy; maintain confidentiality of sensitive information pertaining to the decision making process of the County. A team player with excellent communication skills and initiative is highly desirable.

Examples of qualifying education/experience:

  • An unaltered typing certificate for at least 50 net words per minute (wpm) with a maximum of five (5) errors. The typing test must be for at least five (5) minutes with two (2) gross words penalty for each error, and the certificate must be no more than two (2) years old. The certificate must state the gross words per minute attained and the number of errors; AND,
  • One (1) year of full-time experience performing legal secretarial duties for attorneys or other professional staff in a legal office, which must have included preparing briefs and pleadings, checking citations, setting up depositions, maintaining files and calendars, screening phone calls and using computers; OR,
  • Completion of a legal secretarial curriculum at a community college or a recognized accredited business school.

    In order for your typing certificate and education to be considered, you must attach a copy of your typing certificate, degree transcripts, diploma and/or foreign equivalency report at Step 1 of your application. Please submit only the documents required. Additional documentation, such as awards, letters of recommendation, unsolicited certifications, etc. will not be added to your application file.

    Evaluation

    Qualified applicants will be placed on a twelve (12) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment and supplemental applications. Please ensure all information is complete and accurate as the responses you provide on the supplemental application questionnaire will be reviewed using an automated evaluation system. If you are successful in the initial screening process, your application will be reviewed individually to confirm that the information you provided is accurate and qualifying.
