Lateral Police Officer / Academy Graduates

THE POSITION This is a public safety position that requires the working of unusual hours, rotating shifts and working under inclement weather conditions; patrols an assigned beat, protects life and property, prevents crime, maintains order, enforces laws, ordinances and constitutional mandates, investigates crimes, traffic collisions and disturbances, directs traffic, prepares reports, makes arrests, testifies in court, serves warrants and subpoenas, cooperates with other law enforcement agencies and City departments, provides information to and answers inquiries from the general public.


Police Officer Recruit (While in Training) $6,102 -$6,407; Police Officer $6,727 - 8,177. Salary increase of 5.65% on January 1, 2015 followed by an increase of 2% on July 1, 2015.


Lateral Police Officers requirements include the possession of a California Basic POST Certificate and equivalent police officer employment with a California Law Enforcement Agency in a non-probationary capacity within the past 12 months.

Academy Graduates must meet one of the following criteria:

* Currently enrolled as a Police Academy Cadet

* Graduated from a POST approved Police Academy within the last 3 years

* Been employed with a POST approved California Law Enforcement agency within the last 3 years


Ability to make forceful arrests, to read, comprehend, explain and apply complex issues of law derived from code books, computer screens, and other printed materials. Ability to safely drive a motor vehicle under normal and emergency conditions. Ability to hear and understand verbal communications at normal speaking tones via voice, radio and telephone and to verbalize succinctly. Ability to qualify in the use of firearms on a regular basis. Ability to write accurate, clear, concise, legible, factual reports in a timely manner. Ability to observe and accurately recall names, faces, numbers, incidents, and places. Ability to think and act quickly in emergencies and evaluate situations and people accurately, exercise discretion and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the public.


Must pass a comprehensive physical and psychological examination as provided in the Medical Screening Manual by POST. Weight proportionate to height and build. Vision acuity minimum of 20/100 corrected to no less than 20/30 and normal color vision. Must have no record of felony criminal convictions or misdemeanor convictions, which affect his/her credibility as a witness in a court of law. Must be of good moral character and able to pass a thorough background investigation conducted under POST guidelines, including polygraph testing. Upon appointment, all new Police Officers must complete the Field Training Program with the Foster City Police Department.

The best qualified applicants will be asked to participate in a screening interview which is a condensed version of an oral board interview. Participation in the screening is mandatory in order to be considered for this position. Candidates will be required to bring their POST certificate and T-scores to the screening interview.
