Senior Public Health Nurses perform professional public health nursing in homes, public health centers, and other community settings. As a Senior Public Health Nurse, you will act as a lead nurse providing consultation, conducting home visits in urban and rural communities, assessing and identifying individual and community health needs, and providing case management to high-risk populations. Anticipated vacancies are at the North Inland Public Health Center, California Children Services and Aging and Independence Service-Community Based Care Transitions Program; however, the list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies in other HHSA departments.

This position will be heavily involved in conducting outreach, including making community program presentations and collaborating with area schools, community clinics, family resource centers, etc. to promote and support the County's Live Well, San Diego! initiative. This position also supports the Nurse Family Partnership program in North Inland.

Required Education and Experience

  • Valid California Registered Nurse License is required at time of application; AND,
  • Valid Public Health Nurse Certificate from a State Public Health Nursing or other regulatory agency is required at time of appointment; AND,
  • A Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree in nursing from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency, AND,
  • Three (3) years of experience as a Registered Nurse with at least two (2) years under the direct supervision of an official public health agency with a generalized public health nursing program; OR,
  • Three (3) years of experience as a Registered Nurse working with at least one (1) of the following groups: pregnant women, infants and toddlers, parents, adults and children with tuberculosis, community groups regarding maternal and child health issues and communicable disease.
  • Note: For applicants with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing, a master's degree in nursing from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency can substitute for one (1) year of registered nursing experience.

    Applicants must at least be in the process of obtaining their Public Health Nurse Certificate at the time of interview. Obtaining a Public Health Nurse Certification is a simple and relatively quick process.     Required Attachments
    In order for your education to be considered, you must attach a copy of your degree transcripts, diploma, and/or foreign equivalency certificate at Step 1 of your application. Required attachments submitted on or after February 29, 2008 do not need to be resubmitted. Please submit only the documents required.

    The Ideal Candidate
    The ideal candidate for this position possesses the ability to work at a community level with a good grasp of political and organizational acumen. They should have excellent communication and planning skills to work with Community and Agency partners. The role requires the selected candidate to participate in projects and activities supporting the countywide and regional initiatives and to elevate to their Manger any activity that may impact the Health Center or Agency Operations. The candidate must be able to function autonomously and be accountable to the Manager for time and productivity. Lastly, the candidate must be able to work to locate, develop and distribute resources to school staff, community partners, families, health care providers and HHSA personnel.

    Qualified applicants will be placed on a twelve (12) month eligible list based on scores received during the evaluation of information provided on the employment application and supplemental questionnaire.
