Position and Duties



This recruitment is open until filled. First consideration will be given to applicants who submit their applications with California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Public Safety Dispatcher examination with T-score of 55 and above by April 16, 2014. This recruitment may close at anytime once we receive a sufficient applicant pool. Please apply as soon as possible.



The San Jose Police Department is accepting applications for the position of Public Safety Communications Specialist. Incumbents are required to handle the full range of telephone answering and dispatch functions.



MANDATORY OVERTIME WILL BE REQUIRED DURING CRITICAL INCIDENTS OR TO MAINTAIN STAFFING LEVELS. Wearing a uniform is required; however, uniform expenses are partially reimbursed. Incumbents receive paid training beginning with their first day attending the Basic Dispatch Academy.



THESE POSITIONS MAY REQUIRE ASSIGNMENT TO A SWING, GRAVEYARD, OR OTHER NON-STANDARD SHIFT; most work four 10-hour shifts followed by three days off. There is a shift differential payment of $1.50/hour for Swing Shift and $1.75/hour for Graveyard shifts.



Minimum Qualifications



Any combination of training and experience equivalent to:



- Education: Completion of high school, General Educational Development (GED) certificate, or California Proficiency Certificate.



- Experience: One (1) year of experience working in public contact employment.



- Background: Submit to a personal background investigation as required by the Police Department
