COUNTY EMPLOYEES ARE SUBJECT TO THE COUNTY PROMOTION RULE FOR STEP PLACEMENT IN ACCORDANCE WITH COMP ORD 1.3.5.


The Supervising Public Health Microbiologist position directs a section of microbiologists in the public health laboratory; acts as a consultant on test result interpretations; is directly responsible for the operation and staff of a section in the laboratory; and performs duties in the absence of the Chief, Public Health Lab.
Required education and experience:
  • Current certification as a Public Health Microbiologist issued by the State of California, Department of Health Services, Laboratory Field Services Section, OR a letter from the California Department of Health Services indicating that the applicant has passed the state Public Health Microbiologist certification examination; AND
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency with a major in Microbiology or a closely related field; AND
  • At least five (5) years of experience performing highly complex microbiology or immunology tests in a public health laboratory or in a laboratory that is certified by or exempt from the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment of 1992, and must have included one (1) year of lead work experience.
  • Note: A master's or a doctorate degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency with a major in Microbiology or a closely related field, may be substituted for one and two years of experience, respectively. Experience must be within the last ten (10) years.

    Working Conditions Include:
    Incumbents are exposed to pathogenic organisms, acids, and caustic and volatile chemicals. Must be willing to be immunized against infectious agents encountered in the laboratory including Hepatitis B and rabies, and to have pertinent skin tests, X-rays and blood tests. Incumbents work around automated instruments, operate foot controls or use repetitive foot movements on the hand washing sinks, use face shields and respirators, and work with bio-hazards such as human and environmental specimens.

    Evaluation:
    Qualified applicants will be placed on a twelve (12) month eligible list. All applicants meeting the minimum requirements will be given a score of 100 and placed on the eligible list.
