The Police Department was formed in 1966 and is currently staffed by 77 sworn and 34 non-sworn positions. The Department is a dynamic and enthusiastic service oriented organization with an annual budget of more than $20 million.




The Challenge

As a Police Officer Trainee, you will attend a basic POST certified police academy designed to provide an overview of the criminal justice system including knowledge of laws, police procedures, law enforcement techniques, first aid and physical fitness. You will receive training to develop an awareness of Police Department functions, as well as the responsibilities of Police Officers and how those responsibilites relate to field operations.

The Requirements
To be considered as a candidate for Police Officer Recruit I, you must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment
  • Be able to prove United States citizenship
  • Provide proof of a POST "T-score" of 48 points or higher with application
  • Have no felony convictions
  • 15 semester units at any college in the United States is desired
  • Possess a valid California driver's license with a satisfactory driving record
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Successfully pass a background investigation
  • Prior use of controlled substances may be grounds for disqualification

The Compensation
As a Police Officer Trainee you will be paid $30.32 per hour until you complete the basic police academy. You will paid $5,861 per month until you complete field training at which time you will be paid $6,558 to $7,853 per month in five steps over a period of three years.

Before an appointment may be made to the position, the person selected must provide proof of identity and authorization to work in the United States, according to the federal law.

The Selection Process
Properly complete and submit a Union City employment application and supplemental questionnaire with proof of your T-Score with a minimum pass test score of 48.

Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee that you will be invited to participate in the process. Only the candidates that have the best combination of qualifications in relation to the requirement and duties of the position will continue in the selection process. The process will include an oral panel interview with law enforcement professionals, a physical agility asessment with a minimum passing score of 350, and may also include an interview with Operation and Support Services Managers, and other related test components. All applicants will be subjected to a polygraph examination; a thorough examination of their personal background, a thorough medical examination, and a psychological assessment.

All persons appointed to the position of Police Officer Trainee will be required to complete the police academy, Department's field training program and an 18 month probation period which begins at the date of appointment to the rank of Recruit II. Please note that failing the police academy may also terminate employment with the City of Union City.

  • PERS Retirement - 2.0% @ 62 benefit, 3 year final average compensation; converted to Safety 2.7% @ 57 upon successful completion of the Academy.
