The City:

The City of Chico is one of Northern California’s fastest growing cities. With a population of almost 87,000 situated in an urban area of over 105,000, the City is a regional hub for commerce, education, entertainment and medical care. Chico is home to one of the largest municipally owned parks in the nation, Bidwell Park, and California State University, Chico. Chico is an exciting community with a wide range of activities and

events typically found in much larger metropolitan areas. At the same time, Chico

offers a wonderful sense of community and retains the charm of a small town. Chico is

located in an area that provides an abundance of opportunities for recreational sports and hobbies such as hiking, biking, boating, fishing, and golfing.

Additionally, the department's work schedules allow ample time to enjoy these cultural and recreational resources. Currently, the Chico Police Department is comprised of approximately 130 employees, 64 of which are sworn officers.

The Position:

Under supervision, performs law enforcement and crime prevention work, including powers of arrest pursuant to 830.1 PC; controls traffic flow and enforces State and local traffic regulations; performs investigative work; and performs related work as required.

Typical Duties:

Patrol City in radio car, on bicycle, horseback, motorcycle or on foot; answer calls for the protection of life and property and the enforcement of City, County and State laws; may conduct both preliminary and follow-up investigations of disturbances, prowlers, burglaries, thefts, holdups, vehicle accidents, death and other criminal incidents; make arrests as necessary; interview victims, complainants, witnesses and suspects; gather and preserve evidence; testify and present evidence in court; administer first aid; contract and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the investigation of crimes and the apprehension of offenders; prepare reports of arrests made, investigations conducted and unusual incidents observed; serve warrants and subpoenas; while on patrol, stop drivers who are operating vehicles in violation of laws; warn drivers against unlawful practices; issue citations and make arrests as necessary; check buildings for physical security; attend and police special events and other emergency or congested situations; maintain contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems and preserve good relationships with the general public; perform related duties as assigned.

Ideal Candidate:

- At least 18 years of age
- A citizen of the U.S. or a permanent resident alien and have applied for citizenship
- High School graduation or equivalent
- California Driver License
***Submission of a valid POST Certificate or a written verification of attendance in a POSTcertified Academy is required at application.

Ability to: Physically pursue and capture wanted persons; observe accurately and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents and places; use and care of firearms; think and act quickly in emergencies, and judge situations and people accurately; learn, understand and interpret laws and regulations; prepare accurate and grammatically correct written reports; learn and use standard broadcasting procedures of a police radio system; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Additional Information:
All applicants must be able to pass a detailed background investigation, polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, medical exam and drug screening prior to being selected for a position with the City of Chico Police Department. All Police Officers are required to join the Chico Police Officers’ Association.


Base Salary: $4,428—$5,934 per month
