The County of San Diego is currently accepting job applications for Environmental Health Technician, to fill vacancies in the following Department of Environmental Health programs: Vector Control, Food and Housing, and Hazardous Materials.

Environmental Health Technicians assist professional staff in the enforcement of environmental health compliance measures and perform technical tasks related to environmental health regulatory activities. For additional information on this job class, please click here.

Minimum Qualifications
  • An associate of science degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in biology, microbiology, zoology, chemistry, or a closely related field; OR;
  • One (1) year of laboratory experience performing semi-technical tests on specimens and reagents; OR;
  • One (1) year of experience as a Vector Control Technician Aide in the County of San Diego; OR;
  • Two (2) years of experience providing direct support in a technical environmental health field.
  • NOTE: If applicants are attempting to qualify under Minimum Qualification #1 above, then they must provide a copy of their diploma, transcript, letter of verification from a U.S. accredited college or university during Step 1 of the application process, due by the closing date for this recruitment (12-22-13).

    Evaluation Process

    The evaluation process for Environmental Health Technician will consist of an initial application screening for minimum qualifications; a written examination weighted 50%; and a rating of the supplemental application questions weighted 50%.

    The written examination is scheduled for Saturday, January 4, 2014. Applicants will receive an e-mail invitation notification stating the exact time and location of the written examination. This notice will be sent at least ten calendar days prior to the date of the exam.

    Invitations to take the written examination will be determined by the responses you provide on the supplemental application questionnaire form using an automated evaluation system. If you are successful in the initial screening process and pass the exam, your application will be reviewed individually to confirm that the information you provided is accurate and qualifying.

    The written examination will consist of multiple-choice questions designed to measure the following areas:

    • Basic mathematics;
    • Checking and comparing information and data;
    • Customer service and interpersonal relations;
    • Basic computer knowledge;
    • Reading comprehension and following written directions.

    Note: calculators are not allowed for the written examination.

    Upon successfully passing the written examination, applicants will be placed on an eligibility list for (12) twelve months.

    IMPORTANT NOTES: Please ensure all information is complete and accurate as the responses you provide on the supplemental application form will be reviewed using an automated evaluation system. If you are successful in the initial screening process your application will be reviewed individually to confirm that the information you provided is accurate and qualifying.
