The Council-Manager municipal government has over 225 full-time staff.

The Police Department was formed in 1966 and is currently staffed by 77 sworn and 34 non-sworn positions. The Department is a dynamic and enthusiastic service oriented organization with an annual budget of more than $20 million.




The Challenge

As a Police Officer, your duties will typically include patrolling assigned areas; interacting with the public; conducting criminal investigations; enforcing laws; investigating collisions; preserving the peace and writing reports. You will be assigned to one of four shifts spanning the 24 hour day and these shifts will periodically change. In the Patrol Section you will work three 12 hour and 20 minute workdays and have four days off. If you are assigned to any other Section you will work four 10 hour workdays with three days off. As your skills develop you may be assigned to investigations; community policing, court liaison; traffic; canine; bicycle patrol; Special Weapons and Tactics Team; narcotics; or school resource officer.

The Requirements
To be considered as a candidate for Police Officer Recruit II, you must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment
  • Be able to prove United States citizenship
  • Obtain a POST "T-score" of 48 points or higher is mandatory to apply
  • Have no felony convictions
  • 15 semester units at any college in the United States is desired
  • Possess a valid California driver’s license
  • Have successfully completed a P.O.S.T. certified basic police academy or recertification course within one year of date of application
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Successfully pass a background investigation
  • Prior use of controlled substances may be grounds for disqualification

The Compensation
As a Police Officer Recruit II you will be paid $5,803 per month until you complete field training at which time you will be paid $6,493 to $7,775 per month in five steps over a period of three years.

Before an appointment may be made to the position, the person selected must provide proof of identity and authorization to work in the United States, according to the federal law.

The Selection Process
Properly complete and submit a Union City employment application and supplemental questionnaire with a copy of your P.O.S.T. Academy Certificate of Completion if applicable.

Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee that you will be invited to participate in the process. Only the candidates that have the best combination of qualifications in relation to the requirement and duties of the position will continue in the selection process. The process will include an oral panel interview with law enforcement professionals, may also include an interview with Operation and Support Services Managers, and other related test components. A limited number of applicants will be subjected to a polygraph examination; a thorough examination of their personal background, a thorough medical examination, and a psychological assessment.

All persons appointed to the position of Officer Recruit II will be required to complete the Department’s field training program and a two-year probation period which begins at the date of appointment.

  • Classic Employees - 3% @ 55 benefit, 3 year final average compensation.
  • New Employees - 2.7% @ 57 benefit, 3 year final average compensation.
