THE POSITION


The San Bruno Police Department is accepting applications for Reserve Peace Officer. This is an unpaid, volunteer position. Applicants must attach verification of possession of POST Basic or Reserve Academy certification to be considered for the position.


The San Bruno Police Department has a long standing tradition of small-town service with a big-city dedication to public safety. The Department employs a community-oriented policing and problem solving philosophy where members of the organization are encouraged to develop innovative strategies to improve police operations and service to the community.


The Reserve Officer program is comprised of volunteer Reserve Peace Officers. Reserve Officers are available to support and assist the Department in the protection of life and property, the preservation of public peace and the enforcement of the laws of the country and state. The San Bruno Police Department expects Reserve Police Officers to volunteer a minimum of 16 hours per month.


To be considered, applicants must submit all of the following:



  • Application (online at CalOpps.org)

  • Brief resume detailing qualifications for the position

  • Verification of POST Basic or Reserve Academy certification


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS



  • Must be at least 21 years of age at date of hire

  • Felony convictions and disqualifying criminal history are not allowed

  • U.S. citizenship or a permanent resident alien who is eligible, and applied for, U.S. citizenship

  • High school graduate or GED. Completion of a two-year community college degree or vocational school training in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice administration, public administration, or a related field is preferred.

  • Must posses, or be able to obtain and maintain, a valid California driver's license

  • Must meet all basic requirements AND possess either of the following California P.O.S.T. certificates: Level 1 Reserve: Completion of the Post Basic Course (Minimum of 664 hours) -OR- Level 2 Reserve: Completion of Reserve Officer Modules II and III (minimum of 333 hours)

  • Basic Training Police Academy certificate within the past thirty (30) months from the date of hire or provide proof of current enrollment in a California POST Basic Training Police Academy and must successfully complete the academy prior to appointment.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES


Applicants should possess the knowledge and ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions; perform work requiring good physical condition; good customer service; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; relate to the public in a professional, tactful and effective manner; establish, maintain, and foster positive working relationship with those contacted in the course of work; learn and comprehend factual information, policies, procedures, as well as current case law and applicable statues; take direction well from supervisors; be dependable in meeting scheduled assignments and perform duties as assigned
