DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
This successful candidate will monitor trails, picnic areas, pavilions and similar park areas (via foot, bicycle, and motorized vehicle) in designated parks to promote public safety and ensure proper use of parks and facilities. Interact effectively with the public; greet park visitors and explain park rules, regulations and city ordinances; provide directions and handle public inquiries and complaints. Investigate and resolve designated visitor complaints to provide quality customer assistance. Conduct investigations and may issue citations regarding animal ordinance violations and illegal trash dumping. Conduct investigations on any relevant event occurring on Department property. Complete appropriate reports, such as, vehicle accidents, building burglaries, and employee/visitor injuries. Control activity levels within assigned parks by unlocking and securing gates, checking park use and permits, providing crowd control at City Sponsored events and notifying public of park operating hours. Monitor and direct entering and exiting traffic into parking areas. May issue City of Houston parking citations at any Parks and Recreation location. Use radio communication equipment to call commissioned law enforcement, emergency medical service or other personnel when required. Provide and conduct interpretive services and programs such as identifying plants, animals and historical features. Provide and conduct informative presentations on bicycle safety, child safety, park safety, gang/drug awareness, environmental impact and other topics. Attend meetings, training sessions and conferences. Perform other duties as assigned.


WORKING CONDITIONS
This position occasionally requires lifting of moderately heavy items up to 40 pounds and very long periods of walking and/or riding bicycle on rough surfaces. There are routine exposures to outdoor weather conditions. This position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises, and minor burns.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a high school diploma or GED.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
One year of experience in law enforcement, security, emergency response, or related field is required.

MINIMUM LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Valid Texas Driver's License and compliance with the City of Houston policy on driving (AP 2-2). The following training must be completed within one year of hire or promotion: Urban Park Ranger course, Emergency Care Attendant, City of Houston Health Department training and specialized courses in Houston Police training.

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**

Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification. The minimum to midpoint of this salary range is:
