This position is funded from trust funds collected from various sources.
Duties:

Executes assignments for the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of the voice, data, video, and software related to all MassDOT communication and electronic systems including, but not limited to: two-way radio, fiber optic, telephone private branch exchange, programmable logic controllers, tunnel ventilation, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon gas monitoring, local field controllers, remote terminal units, overhead and portable variable message signs, emergency telephone, automatic gates, highway advisory radio, traffic and security video, security access control, integrated project control system, real-time traffic monitoring and any ancillary electronic equipment.
Required to work with all MassDOT departments and agencies; electrical, maintenance, State Police, toll, administration, RMV, MBTA, EMS, BFD, BPD, DCR, and various other personnel, to insure continuous operation of all equipment. Responsible for providing technical support for all systems and equipment. Required to professionally interface with all departments involved in engineering, operation, and maintenance.

Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair all MassDOT communication and electronic systems on a 24/7/365 basis to ensure continuous operation of life safety equipment.

Performs corrective and preventive maintenance on various life safety systems.

Install voice, data, and video infrastructure for all MassDOT facilities: Highway Operations Center, Registry of Motor Vehicles, State Transportation Building, District Headquarters, drawbridges, maintenance depots, State Police barracks, ventilation buildings, etc.

Install new equipment for various systems; radio, fiber optic, telephone, etc.

Install and maintain radios in all MassDOT and State Police vehicles and facilities.

Support Communications Engineers in installing and upgrading systems.

Perform routine and emergency system evaluation and testing.

Learn unique software packages associated with each piece of equipment.

Comply with all policies, practices, and safety procedures

Preferred Qualifications:

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIRMENTS

Education: Must have a high school diploma or GED, and a certificate in electronics from an accredited technical institute.

Experience: A minimum of five (5) years of field experience in the installation, testing, troubleshooting and repair of communication and electronic systems.

License: Must possess a valid Class D driver?s license.

Physical: Must be capable of performing all duties stated in this form.

Other:
Strong computer skills
Must be able to work in tunnel, bridge and high speed highway environment.
Must be able to work in confined spaces.
Must be available for emergency call out.

In addition to the Minimum Entrance Requirement, the following is also required:

Must demonstrate the ability to read and interpret schematic drawings of communication systems and equipment. This knowledge is used to operate, maintain, troubleshoot and repair all telecommunication systems and equipment as required.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of telecommunication and electronic systems.

Knowledge of the types and uses of test equipment needed to maintain telecommunications systems.

Ability to maintain accurate records.

Ability to prepare general reports.

Ability to analyze telecommunications data, to draw conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.

Must be competent in reading, interpreting and implementing policies and procedures with minimal supervision.

Excellent interpersonal skills required.

Comments:

For purposes of bargaining unit designation, Unit 6 is equivalent to MassDOT Unit D.
