Position and Duties


This is an unclassified part-time, unbenefited classification to conduct comprehensive pre-employment background investigations for the Police Department. Under close supervision by a sworn officer or supervisor, conduct comprehensive pre-employment background investigations that meet all current legal standards. Responsible for developing, conducting, and reporting on background investigations assuring compliance with all minimum standards for appointment and all CA Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), Areas of Investigation regulations and/or all San Jose Police Department (SJPD) procedures and protocols.



Background investigators must be knowledgeable about all applicable local, state, and federal fair employment laws. They must be conversant in the legal requirements for appointment to the positions in question. They must heed all agency policies, practices, and operational limitations. They must base their inquiries and evaluations on candidate behaviors that have a direct relationship to the requirements and demands of the position, and they must do so with consistency and without bias. They must be able to articulate the information gathered from a wide variety of sources and how it is used in determining candidate suitability. You must be willing to work out of San Jose Police Personnel Office at 1661 Senter Road in San Jose.



This position is "open until filled". However, applications will be reviewed and applicants interviewed as they are received. This announcement may close at anytime, once we received a sufficient applicant pool.



RATE OF PAY: $40.00 PER HOUR

The rate of pay is $40.00 per hour and this is an unclassified part-time, unbenefited position funded through June 30, 2015.


Minimum Qualifications


Any combination of training and experience equivalent to:



1. Education: Completion of high school, General Educational Development (GED) certificate, or California Proficiency Certificate.



Experience



2. Five (5) years prior experience as a peace officer in good standing with a law enforcement agency.



3. Two (2) years of investigative experience within a law enforcement agency.



4. License/Certificates: Possession of valid California Driver's License.



5. Background: Submit to a personal background investigation as required by the Police Department.



6. Employment Eligibility: Federal law requires all employees to provide verification of their eligibility to work in this country. Please be informed that the City of San José will not prepare or file a labor condition application with the Department of Labor.
