A Police Officer performs a variety of law enforcement activities during an assigned shift. Major duties may include crime response, patrol, investigation, traffic enforcement, crime prevention and public safety, case presentation and testimony in court. Officers may work weekends, overtime, holidays, and variable shifts. All officers are afforded excellent training and career development opportunities.


Possession of the employment standards does not assure advancement to the Selection Process or placement on the Eligible List. This is a competitive exam where a candidate's performance in the Examination will be judged in comparison with the performance of other candidates. To be considered, applicants must:

  • LATERAL: Have one (1) year of peace officer experience and current employment as a peace officer in the State of California successfully and possess a P.O.S.T. Basic, Intermediate or Advanced professional Certificate,

  • Be 21 years old by date of appointment as a Police Officer.

  • Be in excellent physical condition and demonstrate a state of physical and mental health consistent with the ability to perform assigned duties; have normal hearing; have uncorrected vision no less than 20/80 in each eye which is corrected in each eye to 20/20; and have normal color vision.

  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License and satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment.

  • Be a citizen of the United States or be a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship prior to application date. Application shall not have been denied.


    ABILITY TO observe and accurately remember names, faces, numbers, incidents and places; learn and interpret laws, regulations, policies and procedures; carry out oral and written directions; analyze situations and make quick decisions requiring sound judgment; communicate situations; operate a variety of specialized police department equipment including computerized telecommunications and dispatch equipment; become proficient in self-defense techniques and in the care and use of firearms; maintain level of knowledge and physical condition required for satisfactory job performance; establish and maintain accurate records; prepare concise, comprehensive reports; communicate effectively; act with resourcefulness, courtesy and initiative; exercise independent judgment; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.

    LOYALTY OATH: An oath or Affirmation of Allegiance to the United States and to the State of California must be taken before appointment.

    RESIDENCE: Within a reasonable time, you are required to live within a 50 minute drive to your work.


    Testing will be conducted when a significant number of applications have been received.

    • WRITING SKILLS TEST: Candidates will complete a standard crime report based on information presented in a video tape of an officer interviewing the victim of a crime.

    • PHYSICAL AGILITY: Candidates will take part in a series of physical capability events.

    • SWIM TEST: Candidates will be invited to complete a 50-yard swim test.

    • STRUCTURED ORAL INTERVIEW: Candidates successfully completing the Writing Skills, Physical Agility, and Swim Tests will be invited to a Structured Oral Interview. Those who pass the interview will be placed on an eligible list based on their oral score with 70% required to pass. The interview will consist of situational questions presented by a panel of qualified personnel.

    • BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: A thorough investigation of personal history, including but not limited to work history, education, military, arrest record, etc. will be conducted on candidates certified to the Police Department. A polygraph is a part of the background examination.

    • MEDICAL EVALUATION: All candidates recommended for appointment to the job by the Hiring Authority must successfully complete a required medical examination prior to appointment.

    • PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION: All candidates recommended for appointment to the job by the Hiring Authority must successfully complete a psychological evaluation prior to appointment.

    • DEPARTMENTAL APPOINTMENT: Candidates certified from the eligible list to the Police Department may be interviewed by the Departmental Hiring Authority for possible appointment to the job.


    • PERS: 3% at age 50 (Currently under review). Employee contribution rate is currently 11%.

    • Equipment Allowance: $750 equipment allowance on hiring.

    • Uniform Allowance: $1,104 per year.

    • Health & Life Insurance: A choice of PERS health plans for which the City pays a significant portion of the premium for you and your family. A $50,000 group life insurance policy is provided at no cost.

    • Dental: City paid premium for you and eligible dependents.

    • Vacation: Annual paid vacations range from 2-6 weeks depending on length of service.

    • Holidays: Police officers receive pay for 12 holidays per year plus 1 floating holiday.

    • Sick Leave: Accumulated at the rate of 8 hours per month.

    • 4-10: Patrol officers work 4 days, 10 hours per day workweek.

    • Bilingual Pay: For designated positions $672 per year.

    • FTO Pay: $95 per day when training.

    • Retention Pay: 3% at 10 years, plus 4% at 15 years, and plus 5% at 20 years of service (amounts compounded).

    VETERAN’S PREFERENCE CREDIT: A job applicant qualifies as a veteran if honorably discharged from active military, reservist, or National Guard duty of at least 18 consecutive months within the past five (5) years of the date of application. In case of discharge attributable to service-connected injuries or illnesses, the 18 months active duty requirement need not be fulfilled. An applicant claiming veteran’s preference credit must attach to their application, a legible copy of their DD-214 verifying the type of discharge and date(s) of active service. NO OTHER DOCUMENTATION WILL BE ACCEPTED.
