This position is funded from trust funds collected from various sources.
Duties:

Maintain, troubleshoot and repair all MassDOT communication and electronic systems on a 24/7/365 basis to ensure continuous operation of life safety equipment.

Performs corrective and preventive maintenance on various life safety systems.

Install voice, data, radio, fiber and video infrastructure for all MassDOT facilities: Highway Operations Centers, Registry of Motor Vehicle, State Transportation Building, District Headquarters, drawbridges, maintenance depots, State Police barracks, ventilation buildings, etc.

Install new equipment for various systems; radio, fiber optic, telephone, etc.

Install and maintain radios in all MassDOT and State Police vehicles and facilities.

Support Communication Engineers in installing and upgrading systems.

Perform routine and emergency system evaluation and testing.

Learn unique software packages associated with each piece of equipment.

Comply with all policies, practices and safety procedures.

Qualifications:

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical professional or administrative experience in the field of telecommunications including telephone, telegraph and/or teletype work, or in the regulation of the telecommunications industry, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. An Associate's degree with a major in electrical engineering technonogy or electronic technology may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.*

II. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in electrical engineering or electronic engineering may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required experience.*

*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

Special Requirements: Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License.

Preferred Qualifications:

Must demonstrate the ability to read and interpret schematic drawings of communication systems and equipment. This knowledge is used to operate, maintain, troubleshoot and repair all telecommunications systems and equipment as required.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of telecommunication and electronic systems.

Knowledge of the types and uses of test equipment needed to maintain telecommunications systems.

Ability to utilize a computer and standard office software (such as Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.) to prepare general reports.

Ability to analyze telecommunications data, to draw conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.

Must be competent in reading, interpreting and implementing policies and procedures with minimal supervision.

Excellent interpersonal skills required.

Must be able to work with hand tools and power tools in the service of DOT facilities, tunnels, bridges and traffic roadways including high speed highway environment.

Must be able to work in confined spaces, elevated bridge decks, or on elevated areas via ladder, lift or bucket vehicles.

Must be available for emergency call out.

Certificate in electronics from an accredited technical institute or FCC General Radio Operators License are desired.

Comments:

The schedule shift for this position is Sunday through Thursday 11:00 pm to 7:00 am.

For purposes of bargaining unit designation, Unit 6 is equivalent to MassDOT Unit D.
